The MAC started as a group of civic minded individuals with a common goal. One of those individuals who represents how a community can work together to make successes possible is Patsy Thompson. Patsy, a former school teacher and psychologist in Meade County has embodied everything about the word volunteer when it comes to the MAC.
In 2011 Patsy along with her fellow grant writers, Peggy Darnall, and Joan Wilson, successfully landed the MAC a substantial federal grant through partnership with the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky. The Social Innovation Fund grant has been essential in the early development stages of all MAC programming, but especially towards those geared towards our youth. In addition to her grant writing efforts she coordinated the evaluation process and led the collaboration between the MAC and the school system to offer the CATCH afterschool program at the local elementary level. It was a monumental task to get MAC programming off the ground and Patsy Thompson was at the forefront every step of the way.
Patsy has been involved intensively with other organizations as well in the past. She has volunteered and served with the Meade County School System, the Meade County Pre-School Program, the Meade County Water Commission, and has been involved and a dedicated volunteer at First Baptist Church for many years. She is a valued colleague and an even better person. We thank her for her time and efforts not only to the MAC, but to the Meade County community.
Patsy and Jim Thompson reside in Battletown KY. Patsy and Jim both held positions within Meade County Schools up until retirement, and continue to be involved in local community. They have three children with spouses; J & Candace Thompson, Jessica & Chad Hutchins, Leigh Margaret & Josh Stull. They are the grandparents of Ellie, Jackson, Cannon, Adeline, Annabelle & one more on the way!
While the MAC continues to grow programs and awareness in the local community the question that gets asked the most frequently is “When are you breaking ground on a building”. Our board of directors has been adamantly researching and strategically moving towards the right time to launch the campaign necessary to begin the process. Originally, the fall of 2012 was set as the time frame to officially begin a capital campaign. Nothing about our end goals for the Meade Activity Center have changed. However in an effort to be as thoughtful and well-orchestrated as possible, the campaign process will be commencing closer to the spring of 2013. We thank everyone in the Meade County community for their support of our programs, events, and projects.
There is still plenty of time and great fall weather to get in a round in at River Trace Golf this year. With mild days projected, take advantage of the MAC’s Winter Rates and Twilight specials. From November through March, we will be offering 18 holes with cart for $20.00 seven days a week, and if you play after 3pm the rate drops to $15.00!
We are happy to have added a new addition to the MAC facility. The new pavilion is a great asset for all of our members to take advantage of. In addition to the pavilion, the MAC has secured two new 12’ picnic tables and a new scoreboard. While the primary use will be for the First Tee and various golf tournaments, we encourage everyone to use the pavilion. We hope to see folks having lunch from the pool, family picnics, and simply some relaxation time after a round of golf. We will be looking to secure sponsorships for the scoreboard, so if you or a business owner you know is interested be sure to contact us.
The Meade Activity Center held its first annual Community Night Open House in late August. It was our first ever offering to the Meade County Community to open our doors free of charge for all of our facilities. Over the course of the evening we had over 300 guests and got a chance to see lots of new faces. Various games such as a water balloon toss, putting contest, cornhole tournament, and splash contest were held for the kids in attendance, and there were other activities including inflatables, t-shirt giveaways, and a cookout for all taking part in the event. We would like to thank all of our volunteers who helped make this event a success and hope to have an even larger turnout next year.
The fall series of programs is off and running. With a successful spring and summer under our belts, we are happy to report that we have served over 300 participants in fall programs and events thus far. Youth sports including gymnastics continue to run at or near capacity and both zumba and kickboxing have produced great numbers. We hope to continue to be a leader in offering quality, affordable, programming options for both youth and adults in our community.
We invite you to take visit the MAC Facebook Page to view pictures and see the fun that our participants are having at the MAC.
For more information about these programs and all other activities and updates you can visit our website at www.meadeactivitycenter.org to get details about what the MAC may have to offer you and your family.
